The Rural Ultrasound Fellowship (RUF) takes ultrasound training beyond the “one-and-done” bootcamp. Instead of cramming skills into a weekend, we guide you through a year-long journey of learning, practice, and mentorship. With spaced repetition and continuous faculty support, you’ll actually build —and retain— the confidence to use bedside ultrasound every day.
This is a true fellowship, designed for working physicians who want to grow their skills from anywhere while continuing full-time practice.

Although the fellowship began in rural Canada, its skills and curriculum apply worldwide. Whether you’re in a remote clinic, a busy city hospital, or anywhere in between, you’ll benefit from the universally relevant, customizable training our program delivers.
Participation isn’t limited to small town doctors, or only to Canadians—if PoCUS excites you, this fellowship is for you.

Rural generalism is rewarding — but tough. You see everything, generally with limited resources and no immediate consultants.
Bedside ultrasound bridges that gap, delivering real-time insights, without radiation, and without delay.
No tool holds greater potential to improve care in rural and resource-limited settings than PoCUS. With it, you’ll multiply your confidence at the bedside — instantly.
Despite five decades of progress, PoCUS uptake remains surprisingly low. Many physicians take an introductory course, but a year later, only a handful consistently use what they learned.
Why? Because PoCUS is not a skill you can absorb and consolidate in a weekend crash course.
Think of it this way: you wouldn’t expect a medical student to master physical exam in one weekend. Why should ultrasound be different?
Like the physical exam, ultrasound is a complex skill. It requires new knowledge, a shift in diagnostic thinking, and hands-on practice with real patients.
That’s why RUF is built around three essentials:
1. Time—a year-long curriculum that allows learning to sink in.
2. Repetition—regular practice so skills stick.
3. Mentorship—expert faculty who support you every step of the way.
With this model, anyone can master ultrasound. Yes—anyone.
